Vestibular Migraine

What is a vestibular migraine? Like other types of migraines, this is a neurological condition that causes moderate to severe head pain, often just on one side of the head. You may experience nausea due to the pain as well as sound and light sensitivity. Vestibular migraines present along with other symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo, balance issues, and hearing problems such as ear stuffiness or a ringing in the ears.

If you are diagnosed with vestibular migraine headaches, what sort of treatment can you expect to receive? Many doctors will prescribe beta blockers. While generally used to reduce blood pressure in hypertensive patients, these drugs are also prescribed to reduce migraine symptoms. SSRIs and other antidepressants are also prescribed since, ultimately, migraines are a neurological disorder. Anti seizure medications may also be prescribed. Again, these medications are used to treat symptoms because the underlying cause of migraines is not fully understood.

All of these medications are attempting to address the symptoms but of course have side effects.

Other actions may be taken to try and prevent migraines. These may be recommended depending on what you determine your trigger to be. The doctor may suggest various stress management methods, such as exercise, as well as dietary changes if certain foods are considered the migraine trigger for you.

For many who suffer from vestibular migraines, upper cervical chiropractic has proved to be a viable approach. Adjusting the C1 vertebra, which is found where the brain stem meets the spinal cord, has proved useful in helping to prevent migraine headaches as well as reducing symptoms.

In research with upright MRIs, it is shown that when a misalignment occurs in the upper neck, blood and cerebrospinal fluid flow is changed, which can result in migraine headaches. Correcting this upper neck misalignment has been shown to change the flow of fluid to, from and through the brain, resulting in improved brain health and reduced or eliminated migraine symptoms.
