A visual disturbance is defined as anything affecting the way a person sees. It can be due to a variety of things including the following:
- Pink eye
- Bulging eyes (called exophthalmos)
- Seeing double (called diplopia)
- Migraines
- Meniere’s disease
- Vertigo
When seeking the care of a primary care physician, one will most likely get a referral to visit a neurologist or ophthalmologist. If the patient suffers from other medical conditions, visual problems can become complicated to care for.
An Interesting Story About Vision and Chiropractic
A 12-year-old girl, a patient who was up-to-date on all of her vision care at her optometrist, all of a sudden began noticing her vision was getting much worse. When she sought the care of her optometrist, she revealed to him that she had recently had an injury to her neck during a game of basketball. Because the optometrist was noticing success in the area of chiropractic care as it related to vision, he suggested she make an appointment with an upper cervical chiropractor. It was discovered by the chiropractor that she did have a misalignment in the bones of her upper vertebrae and he gave her an adjustment. Upon her return to the optometrist, her vision had returned to normal.
How Upper Cervical Care Helps Vision
This is not a new scenario to upper cervical chiropractors. For many years, we have been helping those with visual disturbances, migraines, Meniere’s disease, vertigo, and similar conditions. It has been seen that the C1 and C2 vertebrae are often out of alignment in people with these problems. These bones are particularly susceptible to injury, and they have the vital role of protecting the brainstem. However, when the vertebrae become misaligned, pressure is exerted on the brainstem, leading it to send improper signals to the brain. In addition, the nerves controlling vision are found in this same location. The optometrist mentioned previously noted that 30 of his patients complaining of vision problems were sent to a chiropractor and all saw improvement.
