Vertigo is a sense of being off balance. It can give you the feeling that the things around you are rotating when, in reality, nothing is moving at all. When this condition is related to head position, this is known as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). These incidents can be short and inconsequential, exceptionally disturbing, or anywhere in between. Here are some common symptoms of vertigo:

  • Lightheadedness
  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea
  • Unsteady when standing
  • Losing balance easily
  • Spinning sensations

Even though it is hard to determine what could provoke an episode of vertigo, these incidents generally occur when the head is moved. This is related to the vestibular system, which regulates balance and orientation in the body. It consists partly of the inner ear and the canals that are filled with fluid. If this system is imprecise in any way, the brain will not get the correct signal in regards to where the body is located in its environment. This may lead to vertigo.

A familiar cause in cases of vertigo is often head or neck trauma. However, doctors have only found a reason for vertigo in less than half of cases.

How to Care for Vertigo

Our brainstem is crucial to balancing our body’s structure. That’s why it’s important that the brainstem is not hindered in any way. The brainstem is protected by the bones of the upper neck vertebrae. Hence, an improper alignment of these bones can cause serious health issues all over the body. As an upper cervical chiropractor, I have received training to find these misalignments and work to correct them with a gentle alteration.

In 2006, a study was performed on 60 different people who suffered from vertigo. They all underwent upper cervical chiropractic care and each expressed seeing their vertigo improve or go away altogether. Surprisingly, one of the participants had been experiencing episodes of vertigo for 37 years. Yet, after only about 30 days of care, that person came to report being completely symptom free!
