When looking for the underlying cause of Tourette’s, researchers have realized that up to 15% of patients have no genetic link that explains the condition. Also, Tourette’s presets with varying degrees of symptoms and severity from patient to patient, something else that is not usually associated with genetic illness.
On the other hand, there is research that ties Tourette’s to trauma of the head and/or neck. Often, this trauma occurs very early in a person’s life, sometimes in the womb. It has been noted that even those who experience an accident or injury later on in life may begin to develop tics. In some cases, the tics begin immediately after the injury, and sometimes there is a period of months or years that passes first.
A Tourette’s Case Study Sheds Further Light
In the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal, and Family Health, a case study involving a 14-year-old boy was recounted. After missing a couple of days of school, the boy ended up in the hospital with severe tics as a result of Tourette’s. His head would make a constant whipping motion that led to fatigue and chronic daily headaches.
Medications used included Orap, ibuprofen, and Abilify, but no relief came. The parents decided to do some research on their own and learned about upper cervical chiropractic care, a specific form of chiropractic that involves gentle adjustments of the C1 and C2 vertebrae. A misalignment was detected and corrected using the NUCCA technique. Within 5 months (30 visits) the tics were significantly reduced.
At Health Edge Family Spinal Care, we too use the NUCCA technique to provide precise and gentle care for our patients. And we hope to provide similar results as in the study noted above for patients suffering from Tourette’s and other chronic conditions that result from trauma.
