As many as 39 million people in the US suffer from migraines and 1 billion world wide. However, not everyone realizes that migraines are not just really bad headaches. They are actually a neurological condition that comes about in four stages. Let’s take a look at what these stages are and what symptoms accompany them.
- Prodrome phase: This comes on a few hours before the head pain begins and can cause you to feel irritable, be thirsty, yawn a lot, feel fatigued, and have food cravings.
- Aura phase: Not everyone with migraines go through this phase. Those that do experience an aura may experience visual changes — flashes of light or blind spots — or another neurological indicator — numbness and tingling, or weakness. They may also find it hard to concentrate.
- Attack phase: This is when the head pain hits and can last for a few hours or a few days. You will probably experience throbbing and pounding head pain, nausea and vomiting, and sensitivity to light, sound, and certain odors.
- Postdrome phase: Sometimes called a migraine hangover, you will feel drained and unwell for a day or so. You will experience extreme exhaustion, sluggishness, and confusion.
Natural Migraine Relief
If you have migraines, it is a good idea for you to have your upper cervical spine evaluated by a professional. Here at Health Edge Family Spinal Care in Glendale, California, we will look closely at your neck to see if any misalignments are present. If so, they may be placing pressure on the brainstem. This can lead to the onset of migraines. No one truly understands why migraines occur, but most agree that they are neurological in nature and linked to the central nervous system.
We use a very gentle technique to encourage the bones to move back into place. Once corrected, the body can begin to heal itself from damage done and proper signals can begin being sent by the brainstem, often leading to an improvement in or elimination of migraines.
