often called invisible pain. There are two main categories of trigeminal neuralgia called typical and atypical. What do these terms mean?
Typical trigeminal neuralgia or TN1:
- Burning, shock-like pain
- Episodes happen in close succession and can last up to 2 hours
- Extreme sudden pain
- Each individual attack lasts for a few seconds to a few minutes
Atypical trigeminal neuralgia or TN2:
- Constant pain
- Aching, burning pain
- Although severe, less pain than TN1
Interestingly, those who experience trigeminal neuralgia can have one or both types of the condition. Those in the medical field will generally recommend caring for this condition through injections, prescription medicine, or surgery. These have proven effective in some cases. However, unless the underlying cause is addressed, trigeminal neuralgia will continue to occur.
Getting to the Root Cause of Trigeminal Neuralgia
A link between a misalignment of the spine and trigeminal neuralgia has been noted. The spine has the job of protecting the spinal cord. In turn, the spinal cord relays messages to and from the brain and body. If the top bone of the neck (called the atlas or C1 vertebra) misaligns, pressure is exerted on the spinal cord. This results in faulty signals being sent and possible misfiring of the trigeminal nerve leading to the symptoms mentioned above.
Here at Health Edge Family Spinal Care, we use a gentle method that helps this bone to move back to its original place. We do not pop or crack the neck or spine. The technique used allows the body to repair the damage done and restore communication between the brain and body.
A case of a 58-year-old woman who suffered from severe trigeminal neuralgia proves that this type of chiropractic care can help. She received 9 weeks of upper cervical care resulting in the resolution of her trigeminal neuralgia pain. Similar results have been reported by many patients.
