The Effects of Whiplash
Last time we looked at how whiplash effects the upper cervical spine by creating lesions that affect the Eustachian Tube. Motor vehicle accidents are the cause of about half of those injuries and the remainder of those injuries is from head injuries.
Since the initial injury worsens over time, many patients who suffer from vertigo or dizziness due to those lesions usually suffered from the initial accident during their high school or college years. Thinking back to that time, it’s important to remember if you sustained any injuries due to a car accident, a sports related injury, or if you fell on your head.
When we’re young, it’s easy to think that all we need to do for those injuries is ice our back and wait for the pain to go away. We grow older and come to understand the important of maintaining a healthy spine through chiropractic. But we forget about those injuries and don’t make mention of them, but mentioning them helps an upper cervical chiropractor know where to look for possible injuries throughout your body.
Back to Dr. Burcon’s Research Board
When Dr. Burcon conducted his research, he saw that there was over 90% improvement of vertigo patients after an upper cervical adjustment. Anywhere from 25 – 50% of people who suffer whiplash will experience dizziness or vertigo.
Of course, those people who suffer from it immediately or shortly after an accident may not experience it after a few days. But there are those who will continue to experience it for weeks, months, or even years after the accident.
Your Body’s Signals
For that reason, it’s important to pay attention to sign of post-concussion syndrome or a sore neck. They may be signs that something’s not right with your body, and that’s the case in 20 – 45% of patients who suffer extensive whiplash.
When those signals arise, it’s important to pay attention to them and seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor. They can examine your upper cervical spine for any misalignments and make any needed adjustments, so as to restore the body to optimal health.
