I see that you work on the neck. Does that mean you pop and twist it?
No, there is absolutely no popping or twisting of the neck. While general chiropractic adjustments offered by other chiropractors are safe, we do not adjust in this manner in this office.
The NUCCA approach to spinal care is based on gently moving the head & neck into its proper alignment, emphasizing precision & leverage over force. That makes the NUCCA chiropractic adjustment effective while being extremely gentle. Anyone who is fearful of traditional chiropractic adjustments (which are also safe and effective) may appreciate our unique & gentle approach.
What kinds of health problems do you see?
We don’t see health problems. Rather we see the people who come in after struggling with any number of life-limiting conditions. All of these conditions are serious in one way or another to the people who experience them. Our goal is to help our patients remove barriers to the body’s natural, innate self-healing ability, focusing especially on a particular barrier known as the Atlas Subluxation Complex.
Here are some things that people desire help with:
- Back Pain
- Bed Wetting
- Balance Problems
- Bladder Problems
- Cerebral Palsy
- Digestive Problems
- Ear Infections
- Digestive Problems
- Fatigue/Low Energy
- Frequent Colds
- High Blood Pressure
- Herniated Disk
- Menstrual Irregularities/Pain
- Neck Pain
- Numbness & Tingling
- Shortness of Breath
- Shoulder Tension
- Sleeping Problems
- Sinus Problems
- T.M.J. Disorder
- Whiplash Injuries
In each case, the doctor will discuss your history and your goals for your care to make sure that you understand what role the NUCCA chiropractic approach might have for meeting your needs.
How did I get this way?
The average human head weighs 10 – 15 POUNDS, and is supported by the Atlas bone which weighs 2 OUNCES. Therefore, this leaves the upper cervical area (where the head meets the neck) very susceptible to being injured. More often than not, many injuries have occurred over time and lifestyle factors have compounded the damage. Examples of common injuries which can cause this:
- Long, stressful labor
- Difficult birth; use of forceps or suction
- Childhood falls, bumps, bruises
- Placing the head and neck in extreme positions
- Sports injuries
- Bike accidents
- Motor vehicle accidents
- Thousand other events too numerous to list
Do I have to have a health concern to make an appointment, because I’m interested in wellness and general health maintenance?
No, you do not have to have a specific condition in order to benefit from upper cervical chiropractic care. The NUCCA procedure intends to restore proper balance to the human body, regardless if there is pain. Those concerned with overall well-being and performance, including athletes, have found that the better body balance & function through NUCCA is very beneficial.
Do you take care of babies & children?
Of course! The best time to have a spinal injury corrected is right after it happens. For a lot of us, that is when we are little. We encourage parents to bring their children to have their spine and nervous system checked as early as possible. Children’s bodies grow at an amazing rate. Early detection and correction will give your children the chance to grow into healthy, happy adults! The early signs of a misalignment in little spines include:
- Sleeping or eating problems
- Ear Infections
- Growing Pains
- No symptoms (misalignments can be silent)
Often children do not need the full NUCCA assessment as there are many simple reflexes that can be performed to detect for a spinal misalignment. Children also generally respond more quickly to care and usually require fewer corrections. The gentle NUCCA approach is very safe and appropriate for their small bodies.
Why is the upper cervical (upper neck) area so important to health and well-being?
This is essentially the epicenter (“core”) of your body. The most important area for communication from your brain to your body. Complete loss of that communication can be devastating. Do you remember Christopher Reeve (“Superman”)? Superman had a severe injury to his upper cervical spine which resulted in a 100% loss of function from that area. His brain was completely disconnected from the rest of his body. When you have an upper cervical misalignment, you are not losing 100% of the function, but you will have compromised function. You may be losing 30%, 50%, etc. or more of the function of your body. At Health Edge, our goal is to get you as close to 100% as possible.
How long until I am better?
The healing process takes time. If you were to break an arm, the medical physician would cast it and you would be instructed to keep it in the cast for approximately six to eight weeks. That is because this is the typical healing time for bone. When dealing with a spinal misalignment, the integrity of the musculature and ligaments has been compromised and you must allow adequate time for these structures to heal in the aligned position. The longer your spine has been out of alignment, the more possible damage has occurred and therefore the more required healing time.
Do I have to keep coming in?
When will your Brain and Spinal Cord no longer be important? The answer to this is, THEY ARE ALWAYS IMPORTANT. After we correct & reduce the spinal misalignment and get it stabilized, we encourage our patients to get checked anywhere from once a month to twice a year, depending on the person. All in all, Health Edge is here to serve and YOU decide how long you want to benefit from NUCCA care.
Do I get adjusted each visit?
The popular news with NUCCA care is that more visits does not equate to getting better. It is holding the adjustment, and being in a state of body balance that allows your body to heal as it was intended. How often you get adjusted is directly related to your body’s ability to maintain your alignment. You will be given recommendations throughout your period of care in the office which is intended to help you achieve and maintain an aligned state. Holding means healing in the NUCCA system.
How can such a light pressure make such dramatic changes?
For the same reason why one is able to move a pile of heavy bricks with a light push of a wheelbarrow…LEVERAGE. Using the first vertebra (c1 – Atlas) and the weight of the head to gain a biomechanical advantage, the doctor places their own body on a calculated angle to ensure the correction is specific to the patient’s individual misalignment. The force generated by the doctor is transferred to the patient in such a gentle and precise fashion that many patients are surprised by the light feel. Although the procedure is subtle in its application, the results are not! Our patients typically experience quick relief, maximum recovery, and long lasting results!
Will insurance cover NUCCA chiropractic services?
We work with a variety of insurance companies; however, chiropractic coverage varies from plan to plan. We are a fee-for service office meaning all of our patients pay with cash, check or credit card at the time of service. Our office staff will complete all the necessary paperwork and bill as a courtesy in order for you to get reimbursed from your insurance company based on your insurance plan. We do offer several payment plans to help you get all the care you need and pay for it over the course of your care.
What if my policy doesn’t cover your services?
We recommend that you don’t base your decision to get care or not, on an insurance company’s coverage. Your health affects everything you do and everyone you know. It is your most valuable possession. Yet, each of us is free to place a different value on our health. It’s convenient when an insurance company or third party helps pay the bill. But be careful! Don’t allow the profit motive of a huge corporation to make the decision for you. Find out how we make our services affordable for just about anyone.
Does Medicare cover your chiropractic services?
Medicare does cover a portion of the chiropractic adjustments provided in the office. Our staff will submit the services to Medicare, and Medicare will reimburse you directly.
Why aren’t there more chiropractors like you?
We often speak with patients who have very powerful and positive experiences with this care who want to refer family and friends from outside our area. They can get frustrated when discovering that there are very few upper cervical chiropractors in general, and even fewer NUCCA practitioners in particular.
The reasons for this are many.
The first is that not every chiropractic school teaches the importance of addressing the upper cervical spine with a specific protocol, so not every chiropractic student is exposed to our unique perspective on caring for the spine.
The second is that this work requires further education, and travel, which for many reasons, can be a hurdle that stops some doctors (especially young doctors) from participating.
