When Vertigo Combines with a Migraine — Where to Find Help

When Vertigo Combines with a Migraine — Where to Find Help

A vestibular migraine is a migraine that is accompanied by vertigo — a sensation that you or the things around you are rotating. It is a very disturbing experience. Anyone can get this type of a migraine, but it is most often seen in women between the ages of 20 and 40. If you are a woman coping with this condition, it is important to keep in mind that stress and hormones can affect how severely it impacts you. In addition to vertigo, which occurs suddenly and may cause nausea and vomiting, other symptoms are common to vestibular migraines:

  • Extreme sensitivity to sound
  • Neck pain with spasms of the upper cervical muscles
  • Ringing in the ears referred to as tinnitus
  • Intolerance to moving the head, body, or eyes

Sometimes, these migraines occur without the actual head pain but with other neurological symptoms as listed above. Your family doctor may recommend medication to reduce the signals coming from the inner ear and leading to vertigo. However, to gain lasting relief, the underlying cause must be addressed.

The Underlying Cause of Vertigo and Migraines

A 23-year-old woman who was suffering from migraines and vertigo had experienced a concussion five months earlier. After receiving her first upper cervical adjustment, she noticed an improvement in her vertigo. After just two months of upper cervical care, her migraines, vertigo, and other symptoms went away completely.

Migraines, as well as vertigo, have been linked to a misalignment in the bones of the upper cervical spine, the C1 and C2 vertebrae. These bones were designed to protect the delicate brainstem. However, if they become misaligned due to a blow to the head or neck or some sort of trauma, such as whiplash, they may actually put the brainstem under stress. If the brainstem begins sending mixed signals to the brain about the body’s location, vertigo can ensue.

Here at Health Edge Family Spinal Care, we use a gentle method to help realign the bones. Many patients have reported seeing similar results to the case study mentioned above.
