How Weather Affects Migraines

Migraine, Migraines, Headache, Headaches, Head Pain, Migraine Headaches, Migraine Relief, Headache Relief, Tension Headache, Tension Headaches, Migraine Headaches, Migraine Headaches ReliefIt is true: those who experience migraines seem to have a sensitivity towards weather changes. A change in the weather can increase the frequency and severity of migraines. Why is this the case? There really isn’t a definite answer. Various things such as a change in allergy triggers, difference in wind and cloud pattern, shorter days, and cooler temperatures can launch the excruciating pain of migraines.

Studies indicate that at least 12 percent of the world’s population suffer from weather-related migraines. There seems to be a substantial link between migraines and barometric pressure. A barometric pressure migraine is usually felt on only one side of the head and can last between 24 and 72 hours.

Another interesting fact regarding weather and migraines is related to lightning. Did you know migraines can result from a lightning strike? A study done a few years ago reported that a lightning strike as far as 25 miles (40km) away from someone’s home can increase their chances of developing a migraine up to 28%!

Is there a reason why one person’s sensitivity to the weather changes differs from another? It could possibly be related to an issue in the processing of pain signals in the brain and nervous system. Although the technicalities of this aren’t fully understood, the pathways in the brain can seemingly be triggered to feel pain when the weather changes. It is of utmost importance for migraine patients to keep these pathways working properly. How can you do this?

Help For the Upper Cervical Area

Here at Health Edge Family Spinal Care in Glendale, CA, we have been trained to find the principal cause of migraines. A misalignment of the upper neck is often responsible. The atlas and the axis (the upper two bones of the spine) protect the brainstem so it can function properly. Even the smallest misalignment can interfere with the way the body and brain communicate. A gentle readjustment can get the atlas and axis back into their proper position so that communication between the brain and body can be restored. As a result, migraine symptoms lessen and, in some cases, can even be eliminated.
