Childhood Concussions: Why The Right Approach Is Vital

Childhood Concussions: Why The Right Approach Is Vital

Pro sports players are not the only ones who have to deal with the occasional concussion. Young athletes are very competitive, and many head or neck collisions result in a concussion. Sometimes a concussion can have lasting effects that may seem unrelated, such as:

  • Sleep problems
  • Fatigue
  • Migraines or headaches
  • Memory issues (short and long-term)
  • Pain in the back or neck
  • Visual disturbances
  • Speech issues
  • Irritability
  • Mood swings
  • Balance problems
  • Concentration issues

These are all symptoms of post-concussion syndrome. More than 100,000 ER visits annually are for the treatment of concussions. Unfortunately, many cases go untreated. Why? There is a great deal of pressure on “rising stars” to stay in the game or be ready for the next game. Players may ignore or downplay symptoms, so they don’t have to sit on the bench.

Any time a child suffers a concussion, the condition should be monitored over a period of months. Concussions can result in missed school days and in schoolwork piling up that can threaten both the student’s academic studies and his or her eligibility to play a sport in school.

Treating Concussions in Youths

At Health Edge Family Spinal Care, we take all concussions seriously, especially when they involve a young person. We find that many of the lingering symptoms of post-concussion syndrome often go back to a misalignment in the neck suffered at the time of the concussion. Correcting this misalignment using the NUCCA technique can often relieve symptoms quickly and help a child to get back to a good schedule of study and sports once again.

If your son or daughter has suffered a concussion playing sports (or in any other way for that matter), please schedule an examination to determine if a misalignment has occurred.  If so, a customized treatment plan can be established, and healing can begin immediately.
